Scrypt Miner GUI Downloads
« on: April 25, 2013, 10:34:56 pm »
Anyone know where we can download a SAFE non-trojan virus free version of Scrypt Miner GUI. I have found the program on a few different sites and but they are all reporting minerd as having a trojans on it. : ( Any ideas?

A lot of the downloadables of Scrypt Miner GUI at mediafire.com are reporting the files as having trojans on them, probably something that takes over your computer to mine for someone else!  (if I were to guess)

Here are a list of potential bad downloads to maybe steer clear of.

Please let me know if I am missing something, or not understanding how this program  functions with Anti-virus software installed on my computer. I have used IDE programs in the past, that on opening, report as having a trojan but were actually not hosting any trojans.

Thank you,

Spin

Yeah I've seen that... I think it's mostly because it was included in a worm/virus that was building a botnet to cpu bitcoin mine.

If you feel better about building from source... but i think this is old... with no scrypt support.

How does the botnet take over? Does it stay dormant for a while and then just switch  over harsh at some  given point to someone else's computer? ?

No I think that someone wrote a worm to spread and then as its payload it installed CPU mining software so that the bot net operator could mine on peoples computers without them knowing it.  So here comes AV software writers being lazy and instead of stooping the worm they decided it would be easier to just detect the CPU mining software and "tag" it as bad.  So I think that is what your AV software is detecting, not an actual virus/worm.

Thanks lobhater, I think your answer is right on the spot. I have not noticed any weird activity on my machine yet from the past few days using the Scrypt Miner. I will keep monitoring it though.

I think alot of antivirus programs are overly sensitive to some filenames. I have always used AVG and i noticed that on some of my boxes that were running avg 2011/2012 minerd.exe was being flagged as a trojan. (im positive i got my minerd from sourceforge also)

I was on my test network (separate vlans) so i ran the minerd.exe anyway just to see what connections it tried to make. It didnt make any that were suspicious to me. I took the same .exe to a box with the latest avg 2013 and it didnt flag the minerd.exe as a virus.

Very strange. Im not saying that your version wasnt malicious, but there is the possibility it was an oversensitive virus engine. Im pretty sure Microsoft security essentials will flag up any exe called keygen.exe

PS.

Right on, I am thinking 'oversensitive virus engine' as well now, at least from everything I have been reading. Thanks for your input on this post.

Not uncommon with signature based scanning... especially if the precompiled minerd was deployed as part of some malware payload. If you read the comments in cgminer... they ripped out all the cpu mining cause, 'it's only good for botnets'. If you notice with reaper miner... it compiles a kernel for GPU & CPU... which is why I think sometimes you see a 'higher' hashrate with reaper...
